Dog Dish of Doom (An Agent to the Paws Mystery #1) by E. J. Copperman

Dog Dish of Doom (An Agent to the Paws Mystery #1) by E. J. Copperman

Kay Powell runs a talent agent for animals. She gets the wannabe actors acting jobs. Okay, maybe it’s their owners who want their pets to have show-biz jobs but Kay works for the animals and she’s dedicated to them much more so than to the people who own them.

Trent and his wife Louise’s dog, Bruno, is just about to get the role of Sandy in director Les McMaster’s Broadway production of “Annie.” Trent doesn’t much like Les and says he’s a bad director. Les agrees to sign on Bruno as long as Kay is the one to take Bruno to the theater and Trent and Louise are never to be seen at the play.

Everyone kind of agrees to the terms of the contract which is moot since Trent is found dead in his kitchen with a knife in his back and his face planted in Bruno’s water dish. The door to the apartment was locked from the inside with no sign of lock tampering. Louise finds him and calls the police. Of course she is the prime suspect but why would she kill her husband? Things are not making any sense.

Since Louise is being taken in to the police station for questioning and then will be busy with Trent’s funeral Kay agrees to take care of Bruno in her New Jersey home with her two dogs and where her parents are staying with her for a little while.

Things soon start to get complicated. Bruno’s dog walker comes by Kay’s house and says that Louise sent her to pick up Bruno. Kay finds this odd since she’s heard from director Les McMaster that Trent, Louise’s newly murdered husband, was having an affair with the dog walker. Kay finds out that the dog walker received a threatening text message from some bad guys saying that she, the dog walker, would be killed if she doesn’t bring Bruno to them. Is Bruno going to be dog-napped and why and what does Bruno have to do with Trent’s death? Did he see the murderer? And even if he did it’s not as if Bruno can present state’s evidence since he can’t speak, except for the “woof woof” that he does perfectly on cue on stage.

Kay decides to hold onto Bruno thus involving herself and her parents in this murder/dog napping mystery. It’s a good thing Kay has New York City Police Detective Rodriguez along to help her stay alive. Well, that’s something, right?

“Dog Dish of Doom” is the first in author E. J. Copperman’s An Agent to the Paws Mystery Series. I am a huge fan and have read quite a few of this author’s books especially his wonderfully funny, and a bit erie, Haunted Guest Mysteries Series.

Even though “Dog Dish of Doom” does have a murder and a potential dog napping theme it’s really pretty funny. Kay’s life in New Jersey with her aging acting parents who are looking for another gig on a cruise ship and her kind of boyfriend, coffee shop owner Sam, are amusing in itself. But when you add in a murder with Kay and her father helping the NYC Police Department to investigate, a loveable talented dog, Broadway Theater, the musical “Annie”, extra marital affairs, and other love triangles, well you have a winner.

This cozy is funny and like all of E. J, Copperman’s books, very well written with a tight plot. No recipes though. Kay is a talent agent for animals not a baker.

I will say that “Dog Dish of Doom” is one terrific mystery and it will make you laugh. And Bruno, ah Bruno, I wish he was my dog. Even if you’re not a lover of cozies about animals I think you’ll like this one. My only problem is that now I have yet another series by this author that I adore.

Peanut Butter Chocolate & Murder: An Oceanside Cozy Mystery – Book 32 (Volume 32) by Susan Gillard

Peanut Butter Chocolate & Murder: An Oceanside Cozy Mystery – Book 32 (Volume 32) by Susan Gillard

Love is kind of in the air with Heather Shepherd and her friends in Key West, Florida. Jamie’s good friend, Josh, just became engaged and Amy GIvens, Heather’s best pal, is hoping for that elusive engagement ring from Jamie. Even Bernadette, owner of Bernadette’s Beachy Books is getting into the act. She’s has a date with Henry Don, who she met online and has been messaging with for a little while. Finally they are going to meet. Bother Heather and Amy are thrilled for their friend.

But things don’t go exactly as planned. Henry stood Bernadette up for their date! Of course Bernadette was disappointed but her friends made her feel better by giving her Heather’s newest donut creation to calm her down. Unfortunately, that calmness didn’t stay for long because Henry was found shot to death in a parking lot.

Not much was known about Henry except that he recently moved to town, was an architect, and was a widower. He did tell Bernadette that he believed someone was stalking him. But one thing he didn’t tell Bernadette was his real name. When the police started to investigate his murder they discovered that there was no Henry Don. The man did not exist. So who was he? Who wanted to see him dead? Why was he lying?

This one tricky case for Heather, Amy, and Heather’s husband, Police Detective, Ryan Shepherd to solve. They will have to do some major digging to find out the answers to all these questions.

Peanut Butter Chocolate & Murder” is the 32nd book in author Susan Gillard’s  Oceanside Cozy Mystery Series. This is another good novel with an interesting murder, a twist or two here and there, and of course a new yummy donut. Do not miss it.

Caramel Cream & Murder: An Oceanside Cozy Mystery – Book 31 by Susan Gillard

Caramel Cream & Murder: An Oceanside Cozy Mystery – Book 31 by Susan Gillard

Whew, things were certainly busy for Heather Shepherd and her assistants at her donut shop this Spring Break but finally things are slowing down a little. But her best pal, Amy Givens, is very upset that a friend of hers wants to propose to a girl he’s only know for a short time. Heather’s doing her best to rationalize with Amy and to also help with the engagement surprise but things did not get any easier when yet another murder happens.

A waiter from Beachcomber Bistro, Chris Henderson, was found dead behind the restaurant from a head wound. A bloody brick with hair on it was found next to the body. This is obviously the murder weapon. A lot of cigarette buttes were found near the murder site and a barrette wa found near the body.

As Heather and Amy, and of course Heather’s Detective husband Ryan, investigate they discover that everyone seemed to really like the victim including all the people who went to the Bistro and the people who worked with him. Chris’ boss, Barry Oldsway, seemed to respect him and the other three employers, Bruno, James, and Tanya, had no problems with him either.

All five of them left the Bistro around 10:30 PM the night Chris was killed. They all went the their homes and everyone assumed Chris went home too. But if he did why was his body found behind the restaurant past midnight? Was he waiting for someone?

Bruno, James, and Tanya both said that they had seen him behind the restaurant a few time at the end of work but no one knew why he was there. James thought he might have been waiting for his girlfriend, Ellie Kay. But of real interest to the investigators is that Ellie Kay always wore a barette and Bruno was a heavy smoker. Since a barrette and cigarette buttes were found near the body could one of them have killed Chris? Could the two of them plotted to do the victim in, or was it someone else and why?

Heather, Amy, and Ryan will discover who the culprit is and bring him or in for justice.

“Caramel Cream & Murder” is author Susan Gillard’s 31st installment in her Oceanside Cozy Mystery Series. All the regulars are once again here baking donuts and helping to solve another murder. Readers are learning a little bit more of the personal lives of the main characters which makes this, like all the others, a fun book.

Yet another good cozy from a great cozy author.

Cadbury Cream Murder: A Donut Hole Cozy – Book 3 (Donut Hole Cozy Mystery 1) (Second Edition)

Cadbury Cream Murder: A Donut Hole Cozy – Book 3 (Donut Hole Cozy Mystery 1) (Second Edition)

Verna Dixon was prepared for almost anything so when the tornado hit Hillside, Texas she calmly went into her basement to wait until it was over. Okay, maybe she was a little afraid being of a certain age and living alone. Who wouldn’t be in this circumstance? She heard the wind blowing hoping that her house wouldn’t be too damaged.

When things finally quieted down she crept upstairs to see how bad things were. To her joy she saw that her house more or less got through the bad weather without too many problems. But little did Verna know that within a few short minutes she wouldn’t be as lucky.

Verna heard some noise in her yard and saw someone standing there. Verna recognized the person and wondered why she had this unwanted guest. The person was there to murder her!

Police Detective Ryan Shepherd is investigating the case and at first isn’t sure if Verna was murdered. Most people thought she was killed by something hitting her during the tornado but Ryan soon discovers that the widow’s life was ended by human hands. Now all he has to do is figure out who and with the help of donut baker, Heather Janke and her best friend, Amy Givens to help investigate the killer will come to justice soon.

“Cadbury Cream Murder” is the second edition to author Susan Gillard’s third book in her donut hole cozy mystery series. This new edition is a great way of going back and remembering how Ryan and Heather met and how Heather and Amy teamed up as P.I.’s. There’s also some new things in the book that fans did not see in the first edition.

This series is fun to read, easy to get through, and good for all ages. It’s a good way to reacquaint yourself with Heather and the gang or meet them for the first time. Lots of donut talk too. Everyone loves a good donut.

Maple Frosted Murder- A Donut Hole Cozy Mystery (Second Edition) by Susan Gillard

Maple Frosted Murder- A Donut Hole Cozy Mystery (Second Edition) by Susan Gillard

When your donut shop is losing customers and is empty all the time and no one is buying your yummy treats someone has to be blamed. According to Stan Dombrowski the reason why his donut shop is going into the gutter is not his fault but the fault of Heather Janke the owner of the new donut shop, Donut Delights. Oh, that Heather Janke, stealing his customers! Stan did his best to put Heather out of business by putting out false reports about her shop but the popularity of Donut Delights never waivered. Okay, so what if maybe Stan’s donuts weren’t great? So what if he was a little stingy with his ingredients? That didn’t mean a thing. Stan was making donuts in Hillside, Texas long before Heather Janke came and he’ll be darned if she will take over. He’ll show her and go over and tell her exactly what he thinks.

Stan does that and has a huge screaming fit with Heather at her shop with lots of customers listening. He claims that Heather is purposely trying to put him out of business. The nerve of her.

But the next day Stan is found dead in his donut shop, his body found in the freezer. And who’s the prime murder suspect? Heather of course. There were so many witness to their argument that everyone naturally assumes that Heather murdered her donut-making rival. What’s a girl to do? Well, she does what she does best and starts investigating Stan’s death with her best pal, Amy Givens.

There are lots of suspects since Heather was not the only person he disliked or disliked him. His employee, Ben, had problems with Stan, Stan’s wife wasn’t thrilled with him, he lost his seat on the town’s board, and the teenage clerk in the grocery store didn’t like Stan since the day Stan accused the teen of cheating him.

There were lots of people who had something against Stan and any one of them could have done him in. Heather knows it’s up to her to find the real culprit before she’s put behind bars.

“Maple Frosted Murder” is the second edition or author Susan Gillard’s popular cozy donut hole mystery series. It was fun to reread the book and be reminded how Heather’s history in the town of Hillside, Texas began and especially how she formed all the wonderful relationships and friends she found there, not to mention her future husband.

The novel was as entertaining the second time around as much as it was during the first reading. It’s always nice to go back and take a look at the start of a great series.

“Maple Frosted Murder” is a great book for all cozy-lovers.

Caffe Latte & Murder: An Oceanside Cozy Mystery – Book 30 By Susan Gillard

Caffe Latte & Murder: An Oceanside Cozy Mystery – Book 30 By Susan Gillard

Spring Break goes on forever in Florida. All the students from all the different colleges in the cold northeast flock to the warm sunny weather that Florida brings. Since Spring Break week is different for many schools southern Florida is always crowded and busy for a month or so during the winter. But being crowded and busy are great for all the businesses in the area including Heather Shepherd’s popular donut shop.

Heather and her assistants have been baking donuts non stop due to all the business this frantic Spring Break has brought them. Heather and her best friend, Amy Givens, really need a donut break but it seems to always be “time to make the donuts.”

Heather and Amy soon learn that  vacationer Devon Davidson was found stabbed to death by his maid Millie. He was in his house behind a desk, and Millie is sure that someone was tinkering with the safe trying to open it. Heather and Amy might be up to their elbows in donut dough but they drop the donuts to help the police solve this newest murder case.

It’s hard to figure out why Devon was murdered because there are quite a few suspects. Devon’s neighbors were not one of his fans because Devon always threw wild noisy parties that lasted well into the early hours. One of his neighbors, Mr. Brewster, was always complaining about the noise and threatening Devon. His other neighbor, Katherine Teller, wasn’t thrilled with Devon’s parties but she tried to do her best to remain friendly with him. She even brought him some beer during the party the night Devon was murdered. She didn’t stay long since she didn’t really know the people in attendance.

Devon’s best friend, Jack Waverly, came to Florida with Devon and Devon’s girlfriend, Tammy, for vacation, but Jack didn’t know how his pal was murdered since he left the party to go to a hotel room with a girl whose name he kind of forgot. Maybe it was Coral, or Cara, or Cora, Jack wasn’t sure.

Jack did say that Devon was very wealthy with many homes and that the safe just contained some papers. He had no idea who was named in Jack’s will and thought that maybe Devon’s cousins would inherit everything.

As the investigation continues Heather and Amy discover that the murder victim had an argument with Tammy, his girlfriend. Anyone could have stabbed him; Tammy the girlfriend, Jack the best friend, one of his annoyed neighbors, a guest that was at his party, or was it the maid Millie? Once again there are suspects galore but Heather and Amy will figure out who permanently ruined Devon Davidson’s Florida vacation.

“Caffe Latte & Murder” is the 30th installment of Susan Gillard’s Oceanside Mystery series. Heather and Amy are back on their P.I. jobs helping Heather’s husband, Detective Ryan Shepherd, solve the case. Heather’s able baking assistants are busy making the donuts and holding down the donut shop while her neighbors, Leila and Eva, keep an eye on Heather’s daughter, Lilly and Lilly’s visiting friend, Nicolas. Have no fear, all is well and the murder will be solved.

Yet another good mystery for Heather Shepherd fans everywhere.

Walk a Crooked Line (Detective Jo Larsen #2) by Susan McBride

Walk a Crooked Line (Detective Jo Larsen #2) by Susan McBride

Being a teenager is much harder than people think. It isn’t just school, dates, hanging out with friends at the mall, and dealing with your parents. For 15 year-old Kelly Amster it’s far worse. She wants to be accepted by the popular crowd, she wants nice clothes, she wants to go to all the good parties, and she’s determined to change herself enough to get those things. But her richer schoolmates have no intention of letting her into their group or even pretending that they acknowledge her. Someone is even posting some mean comments to her Facebook page telling her not to bother being like them, that she’s a loser, that she isn’t even worth the air she breathes, and Kelly eventually believes these posts. The only thing she can do to rectify things is to throw herself off the old water tower and end it all which is exactly what she does.

Detectives Jo Larsen and Hank Phelps are investigating Kelly’s suicide. Jo is sure that there was something more going on in Kelly’s life that would make her want to kill herself. The sad thing is that Kelly’s mother, Barbara, works as a home care nurse to help people cope with their children dying from cancer and Barbara seems to show more love for these children than she does for her own daughter.

Kelly’s best friend, Cassie, is angry at Kelly for wanting to change and become part of the “in-crowd.” Cassie  was angry enough to burn their friendship bracelet thus ending their relationship.

Kelly is now alone, her best friend is gone, her mother spends more time with other kids than with her, and there’s no father around. She honestly believed that death was the only way out of her miserable life. Detective Jo Larsen sees a lot of herself in Kelly since her childhood was horrible too but Jo was strong and fought and struggled and was able to become an adult even though her childhood nightmares are with her everyday of her life affecting every part of it. Jo understood Kelly and is determined to find out who, figuratively, pushed Kelly off that water tower.

As the detectives investigate they discover some information on Kelly’s last few weeks of life. She was invited to one of the popular kids’ parties and something happened to her there. Something terrible but she thinks that no one will believe her unless she has proof and she does have proof. With it she has the means to destroy one of the richest families in the community but she kills herself before any of the proof can be revealed.

The case is very tricky with everyone hiding information or just outright lying to Jo and Hank. And making things a little more difficult is a rash of dog-nappings going on.

Older dogs are disappearing from their yards. Some are occasionally found crawling along a back road, barely able to move because of broken ribs and legs. These dogs were beaten but were able to somehow escape only to shortley die from their wounds. These poor animals can’t speak for themselves so Jo and Hank find themselves trying to find out what happened to them. The detectives are investigating two similar cases; one of an emotionally beaten child who kills herself and the second of physically beaten dogs who die from physical abuse.

Jo is determined to find out who the culprits are and to make sure they pay for the pain they caused both Kelly and the defenseless animals.

Walk a Crooked Line” is a complicated, well thought out, and a thoroughly exciting story by author Susan McBride. It is the second in McBride’s Jo Larsen series.

Like the first book, “Walk into Silence”, this novel is very dark, thought provoking, and a bit uncomfortable at times. It’s not for the very squeamish not that there’s an abundance of violence here because there isn’t but the book does deal with some unsettling aspects of life that not all people care to read about. Ms. McBride does a brilliant job of treating these difficult topics very respectfully for her characters and her readers.

I’ve read a few of Susan McBride’s books. She has a couple of series that are also well-written, cute, and fun. Actually the author does surprise me. Most authors, not all, but most authors, can only write in one style and that’s fine especially if their books are good. But Ms. McBride shows her darker side in the Jo Larsen series, a dark side that really isn’t shown in her two other other series.

Walk a Crooked Line” has nice twist that you don’t really see coming up and that twist gives it a great ending. Again, not for the sensitive reader but wonderful for mystery lovers. A novel not to be missed.

Strawberries & Crème Murder: A Donut Hole Cozy Mystery Book 1 (Second Edition) by Susan Gillard

Strawberries & Crème Murder: A Donut Hole Cozy Mystery Book 1 (Second Edition) by Susan Gillard

The beginning of Christa Fordyce’s day was very good. She smiled as she looked at her new donut shop, “Christa’s Creations”, which would have its grand opening the very next day. She dreamed of how popular her shop would soon be and how everyone would flock there to eat her tasty treats. So what if she stole all the recipes from her former employer, Heather Janke, owner of “Donut Delights?” Christa always got what she wanted and stepped on everyone and anyone to get her way. She didn’t care that very few people liked her as long as she got what she wanted and right now she wanted her own donut shop.

But maybe, just maybe, someone wasn’t afraid to let Christa know how they felt about her because she was found murdered in her shop with crumbs of a half eaten poisoned strawberry creme donut on her lips. But who killed her? Could it have been her last boss, Heather Janke, who fired Christa two weeks earlier for stealing her donut recipes? Detective Ryan Shepherd of the Hillside Police Department thinks that talking with Heather about her previous relationship with the dead woman would be the best place to start. But Heather did not like being a suspect in Christa’s death so she decided she better do a little investigating of her own. It’s not that she didn’t trust Detective Shepherd, well, maybe it was a little.

Heather discovered a few interesting things about Christa. Her assistant, Joey Gorham, who was previously jailed for selling drugs, found Christa’s body in the shop. What why was he doing working in a donut shop anyway?

William (Billy) Edwin Fordyce, Christa’s younger brother, was recently released from rehabilitation for drug use for the fourth time. He was also friends with Joey Gorham.

Billy gave Heather the key to Christa’s shop saying that his sister “screwed him over.” Maybe he felt she screwed him because his wealthy father cut Billy off from his will and Billy thinks this is Christa’s fault. Would he actually murder his sister?

As long as Heather had the key to the shop she thought she’d take a look around and she found something interesting. There was some pink icing on one of Christa’s desk draws. Christa was meticulous and very neat and there would be no way that she’d leave icing on her furniture. Heather’s investigation was in full swing now. She tried to get Detective Shepherd to listen to her theories but he just told her to let the police department do the investigating. Heather was not going to let that happen so she and her best friend, Amy Givens, started poking around in Christa’s life. It was then that the two friends figured out that doing some freelance investigating could get very dangerous for them.

Strawberries & Crème Murder” by Susan Gillard, is the second edition of the very first Donut Hole Cozy Mystery Series book. Having read all of these novels it was a delight and a pleasure to reread the first in this popular series. Rereading how Heather and Ryan met and being reintroduced to all the wonderful characters that are now so familiar to me was a joy. At the end of the book there’s a link where you can get four easy to make donut recipes straight from Heather herself.

I know there are lots of fans of this delicious series and I’d urge all of you to grab this new edition of  book one and reacquaint yourself with everything. And if you’re new to the series Strawberries & Crème Murder” is a great introduction to the beginning of a terrific family-friendly mystery series.

Powdered Grape & Murder: An Oceanside Cozy Mystery – Book 29 by Susan Gillard

Powdered Grape & Murder: An Oceanside Cozy Mystery – Book 29 by Susan Gillard

College student, Teresa Ray, went to Key West, Florida for some Spring Break fun with her friends Marigold Mayer and Jess McKish. They checked into adjoining rooms at the Seaview Hotel anticipating having a great time.

After a night of drinking a little too much and making enough noise that a person in another room complained about them, the girls eventually fell asleep.

The next morning Jess was pretty drunk and awoke with a hangover and remained in bed. Marigold felt fine and went out and Teresa decided to get out of bed and sit on the fifth floor balcony and relax. Except something happened. Teresa fell from the balcony and was killed.

At first Police Detective, Ryan Shepherd, and the rest of the police thought that the death was accidental but he soon changed his mind and began to think Teresa was murdered. His change of opinion came with some help of his donut baker/P.I. wife, Heather Shepherd. Heather and her best friend, fellow P.I., and baking assistant, Amy Givens, always helped the police solve any murders in the area and the two women were fundamental in helping out once again.

A shiny coin was found on the balcony where Teresa was pushed and in her hand the police found a piece of black cloth. Could Teresa have grabbed hold of a shirt or a dress or a jacket of the person who pushed her and was this evidence?

There were no signs of struggle on the balcony and Teresa didn’t have any injuries to her body that showed that she was shoved. This is not going to be an easy case to Heather and Amy to solve. Any one of the people staying in the busy Key West hotel during Spring Break could be the killer. Maybe even one of Teresa’s friends could have murdered her for some reason but why? Well, Heather and Amy, with the help of Heather’s newest donut creation, will find the answers to everything.

Meanwhile, something strange is going on with Amy’s longtime boyfriend, Jamie. He’s acting strange and Amy swears that she saw his best friend, Josh, in town but Jamie isn’t telling her anything. Could he be planning a surprise proposal?

Powdered Grape & Murder” is the 29th installment of author Susan Gillard’s Oceanside Cozy Mystery Series. All the characters from the rest of the series are here baking donuts and solving murders. The only problem is that the editing could be a little better and a few of the mistakes can force you to stop reading for a second to try to figure out what the sentence means. But other than that this is another good story in an excellent, fun-filled, family-friendly series. You can read the novels in any order since they’re basically stand-alones. Just sit down, read, and enjoy yourself.
